Funk Beats
Funk is a musical genre that was born in the mid to late 1960s, when mainly African-American musicians fused soul, jazz, Latin rhythms (mambo, for example) and R&B to create a new rhythmic and danceable musical form.
Funk lives in the space between the hits. The funk beat drums land on the one and then wait, the bass plays short notes and leaves silence where a rock or trap arrangement would keep hitting, and a guitar or clavinet scratches the offbeat like another percussion voice. That gap is why a funk beat sample borrows so well into hip hop, and why a funky type beat runs under a verse without being rewritten. Nothing is decorated twice, so a funky trap beat keeps room for a voice.
Funk type beats: from James Brown to the G funk sample
The range here is wide. A James Brown type beat is the root of the whole thing, a G funk type beat slows the same groove and adds a whine on top, and a drill funk type beat pushes the pattern into the drums of the moment. A montage, a heist scene, a game level, the credits: that is where this sound works, and it is what a Dr. Dre type beat or a Snoop Dogg type beat has done for years. The Brazilian funk type beat and baile funk type beat searches are a different genre altogether.
