Every sampled type beat begins with a needle drop and a decision about somebody else's record. Someone played it, someone recorded it decades ago, and the job is to find the four seconds that hold a whole song and pitch them into a key nobody agreed on. A soul sample type beat and a gospel sample type beat carry the voice, a jazz sample trap type beat carries the chords, and the sample type beat trap end takes that same loop and drops it under sliding bass and fast hats.
Sampled type beats after Madlib, J Dilla and The Alchemist
The lineage runs from the MPC era to now. Madlib and J Dilla turned the off grid swing of a flipped break into a signature, The Alchemist works the same idea colder and slower, and the Kanye sample method of speeding up a soul record was the lesson a whole generation took home. Detroit sample type beat and sample drill type beat are the newer branches of that tree, and a memphis sample type beat keeps the tape wobble where it belongs.
