What Is Phonk? Memphis Roots and Drift Phonk Explained

Phonk is the rare genre that got its name before it got an audience. It is a subgenre of hip hop that took the Memphis rap of the early 1990s, slowed it down, ran it through a sampler and put it back online, and it spent years as a SoundCloud insider thing before TikTok made a faster, louder version of it the soundtrack of every drift clip online.
If you only know phonk from a video with a cowbell in it, you are hearing one branch of a tree with older roots.
Memphis, Houston and a habit of slowing things down
The family tree is short. Phonk draws on Memphis rap from the early 1990s, the years of DJ Spanish Fly, DJ Squeeky, Tommy Wright III and Three 6 Mafia. The other half comes from Houston: DJ Screw's chopped and screwed technique, which dropped the pitch, dragged the tempo and smeared the vocal into a texture.
Phonk is what happens when those two habits meet a sampler in a bedroom instead of a studio: a synthesizer, a drum machine with an 808 underneath, and vocals that are borrowed rather than recorded.
SpaceGhostPurrp and the name
The word was coined and popularized by SpaceGhostPurrp, who used it in tracks like "Pheel tha Phonk" and "Bringin' tha Phonk" and put it on the cover of his 2012 debut, Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp.
The scene that followed was small and entirely online. Members of his collective Raider Klan, among them Denzel Curry, Xavier Wulf and Amber London, plus rapper Lil Ugly Mane and producer DJ Smokey, spent the early 2010s reviving the Memphis sound in a new generation of files. The distribution channel was SoundCloud, not radio, which is why the genre never had one regional accent to point at. Between 2016 and 2018 #phonk trended on the platform year after year, and curators such as Ryan Celsius pushed it further with long YouTube mixes.
Rare phonk and drift phonk are not the same thing
Most arguments about phonk are arguments about which one you heard first.
- Rare phonk keeps the Memphis samples and polishes the drums. DJ Yung Vamp, Soudiere and DJ Smokey are usually credited with it, and it sounds like a cleaner, slower trap record with a haunted vocal inside.
- Drift phonk appeared in Russia in the late 2010s and is the version that went global. High bass, TR-808 cowbells, distortion heavy enough that the sampled voice stops being words. Faster than the original and short, which is what a video edit needs.
Drift phonk colonized the places where a track has four seconds to prove itself: drifting clips, street racing, weightlifting, football edits, anime. One of the first records in that style is "Scary Garry", by Kaito Shoma in 2016. TikTok did the rest from 2020 on, and in May 2021 Spotify published an official phonk playlist made almost entirely of drift phonk. Kordhell, the alias of Mick Kenney, was the first phonk producer to reach Spotify's 500 most popular artists.
What is actually inside the beat
Strip the branding and a phonk beat is a handful of decisions. A cowbell carries the melody, doubled and detuned. The 808 is overdriven until it clips, and the clipping is the sound rather than a mistake. Tape hiss or vinyl crackle sits under everything to fake an age the file does not have. A vocal gets chopped until it works as percussion, and the midrange is crowded on purpose.
The dirt is the genre. A clean phonk beat is a trap beat with a cowbell on top, and listeners hear the difference in the first bar.
Brazilian phonk and Japanese funk
Two offshoots now travel under the same word. Funk automotivo, a Brazilian style built on funk carioca, is routinely labelled Brazilian phonk outside Brazil, and by the mid 2020s it was the sound most people meant by the word. Japanese funk is newer: a style that appeared in the early 2020s, mostly made outside Japan, blending J-pop, anime music and city pop with baile funk and leaning on AI vocals. BellyJay's "Montagem Hikari" collected 14 million YouTube views by April 2026.
Getting that sound without a clearance problem
Most phonk is built on somebody else's record, which is fine until a distributor asks for paperwork. The alternative is to play the parts yourself and keep the attitude: minor key, distorted low end, and a cowbell nobody has to license. The Butcher is that idea with a horror film mood, and it sits with the darker end of the catalogue on the dark type beats page. For the harder side of the same family there is hardcore, and the full instrumentals catalogue carries its licences on every page.
Frequently asked questions
What is phonk music?
A subgenre of hip hop built from Memphis rap samples, chopped and screwed production and SoundCloud distribution. The name was coined by SpaceGhostPurrp.
Who invented phonk?
Nobody alone. The sound comes from early 1990s Memphis rap and Houston's chopped and screwed scene. The word came from SpaceGhostPurrp and Raider Klan.
What is the difference between phonk and drift phonk?
Drift phonk is faster and louder, built on cowbells and clipped bass, and came out of Russia in the late 2010s. Classic phonk stays closer to the Memphis sample.
Can you sell a phonk beat that uses samples?
Only the parts you own. A sampled Memphis record belongs to whoever holds that copyright, so it cannot be licensed cleanly until the sample is cleared.
Is Brazilian phonk the same genre?
Not quite. Funk automotivo comes from Brazilian funk and picked up the phonk label outside Brazil. It shares the energy, not the Memphis lineage.
