Then Skrillex took the throne in 2012 / 2013 with an even harder bass sound design. But… What if you mix Dubstep music with Hip Hop beats? It’s not rapstep, it’s not trapstep, they’re Dubstep Beats with room enough to spit something over them.
Dubstep is the genre where the second half of the bar does the talking: a half time drum leaves the snare alone on the third beat, and everything above it is sound design rather than decoration. Listen for a sub that stays clean under a wobble bass, growls and formant filters that move, a drop that arrives by subtraction instead of volume, and a snare tuned to cut through a distorted lead. Types of dubstep differ mostly in how far the bass gets pushed.
Dubstep beats, riddim type beats and the difference between them
The riddim type beat end strips the melody back to a single talking bass and lets syncopation do the work, and the difference between dubstep and riddim is exactly that patience. Headphones show you the stereo movement and the clean low end; a club system turns the same file into pressure you feel in the chest. A dubstep instrumental with that much low end is hard to write over, so for a dubstep type beat pick the ones where the lead leaves a gap on the second bar, because the vocal has to live where the bass is not.
